The Mill Field, Hampshire

The Mill Field is a Local Nature Reserve on the edge of Basingstoke in Hampshire. The 11.7-hectare site sits beside the River Loddon and is owned by the borough council. It is managed by the Mill Field Conservation Group and the council together. Grassland covers most of the area, with patches of scrub and hedgerows along the edges. The reserve shelters water voles and dormice among its wildlife. The site is recognised for its rare insects. Moths such as the waved black, lunar yellow underwing and water carpet appear here. Marbled white butterflies drift over the grassland in summer. These species depend on the mix of open grass and dense cover that the reserve provides. The conservation group keeps the habitat in good condition for them. Visitors walk along grassy paths that wind through the reserve. Wildflowers bloom in season, adding colour to the landscape. The River Loddon borders one side, offering a quiet spot to pause. Benches allow people to sit and watch the wildlife. The reserve shows how an urban edge can still support important species.
