Mariahilfberg

Mariahilfberg is a small hamlet and pilgrimage site in southern Lower Austria. It sits on a saddle below the Residenzberg, a hill reaching 818 metres. The place centres on a 708-metre-high ridge where a pilgrimage church, a Servite monastery, a Stations of the Cross with a replica of Christ’s tomb, an hermitage and several smaller shrines stand together. Its fame began in the mid-17th century after a local blacksmith dreamed seven times of a picture of the Virgin. When the image was hung on a beech tree in 1661, witnesses reported lights and a white dove interpreted as the Holy Spirit. A crippled man’s arm was said to be healed, and by 1664 the site drew pilgrims from far away. Pope Clement IX confirmed the miracles the same year, and in 1688 Cardinal Leopold von Kollonitsch dedicated the church to the Virgin of Help. A fire in 1708 destroyed the building, but it was rebuilt larger by 1727 in Baroque style. Visitors walk up from Gutenstein on the Wurzelweg, a path lined with statues of Mary’s life. Inside the church a single nave opens into a three-bay transept with side altars dedicated to the souls in purgatory and Our Lady of Sorrows. Behind the pulpit the choir holds a Baroque oratory, and above the high altar the miracle-working image hangs framed by a painting of the Queen of Heaven. Outside, a long two-storey monastery with 18th-century stucco ceilings houses the Servites. A Stations of the Cross climbs the Residenzberg to a Jerusalem-style tomb, while caves and rock shelters nearby display frescoes of saints. At the summit a broadcasting tower overlooks the Schneeberg, and the Raimundsitz offers a quiet spot once frequented by the poet Ferdinand Raimund.
