Hinterer Langbathsee

The Hintere Langbathsee is a mountain lake in the Salzkammergut region of Upper Austria, near Ebensee on the Traunsee. It sits at the northern foot of the Höllengebirge range, 723 metres above sea level. The lake drains into the Pfrillenbach, which flows onward to the Vorderer Langbathsee. Its nutrient-poor waters and largely untouched shoreline support a variety of plants and animals. Since 1965 the lake has been protected as a nature reserve and is owned by the Austrian Federal Forests. The lake stretches 600 metres long and 400 metres wide, with a maximum depth of 13 metres. It forms part of a larger protected area covering 12.4674 hectares. Swimming is not common here, and while algae raise the biomass level, the water still meets the highest standard for bathing quality. The surrounding forest and rugged mountains create a quiet, unspoilt setting. Visitors find a peaceful mountain lake surrounded by dense woodland and steep slopes. The clear water reflects the forested peaks of the Höllengebirge. Few buildings stand near the shore, keeping the scene wild and undisturbed. A narrow path circles part of the lake, offering gentle walks with views over the water. The air is fresh and the only sounds are wind in the trees and birdsong.
