Großes Festspielhaus

The Großes Festspielhaus stands on the northern slope of the Mönchsberg in Salzburg. Built in the 1950s to the designs of Clemens Holzmeister, it replaced an earlier festival house. The building combines modern concrete with traditional stone, creating a bold presence against the hillside. Its wide stage and adaptable auditorium were planned for large-scale performances. The lobby opens through five bronze doors, each marked with a Latin inscription about music and inspiration. This opera house is worth visiting for its role in the Salzburg Festival. Herbert von Karajan helped shape both the building and its early programmes. The auditorium seats 2,179 people and can be adjusted for different kinds of events. Its stage, 100 metres wide, is among the largest anywhere. The Latin motto above the doors reminds visitors of the building’s artistic purpose. Inside, the square auditorium focuses attention on the stage. The lobby’s bronze doors and high ceilings give a sense of occasion. The building also houses offices and tunnels carved into the rock behind it. From the street, the contrast between the modern entrance and the historic city below is striking.
