Church of St John the Evangelist, Cardiff

St John the Evangelist Church stands in Canton, a district of Cardiff that grew rapidly in the early 19th century as the city expanded with industry. Designed by architects John Prichard and John Pollard Seddon, the church was built in stages over nearly fifty years, beginning with the nave in 1854–5 and later adding aisles, a steeple, and a chancel. The spire was modified in 1902 by G.E. Haliday, who also added a west bay, while minor changes were made in the 1950s. Vincent Saulez served as the church’s first minister and helped establish another local church. In 1975, the building was recognised as a Grade II listed structure. The church’s interior features a triple-gabled reredos, an octagonal Victorian baptismal font, and stained-glass windows spanning different periods. The most recent stained glass dates to 1981, adding to the variety of designs. The building reflects the Gothic Revival style popular in the 19th century, with careful attention to detail in its construction. The slow, phased building process allowed for adjustments as needs and resources evolved. The church remains an active place of worship within the Rectorial Benefice of Canton.
