Cardiff City Stadium

Cardiff City Stadium stands in the Leckwith area of Cardiff, Wales. It replaced Ninian Park as the home ground for Cardiff City in 2009. The stadium is also used by the Wales national team. Part of the larger Leckwith development, it sits alongside the Cardiff International Sports Stadium. The site once held the Cardiff Athletics Stadium before construction began. The stadium’s Ninian Stand was expanded in 2014 to increase its capacity. It remains the second largest stadium in Cardiff and Wales after the Millennium Stadium. The stadium’s construction followed years of planning and financial challenges. Former owner Sam Hammam first proposed the idea in the early 2000s. Approval came after talks with the Cardiff Lord Mayor and the Welsh Assembly. Delays arose due to the club’s financial troubles, including debts over £30 million. The project only advanced after securing funding and a retail partner. Construction finally started in 2007 and took nearly two years to complete. Visitors find a modern stadium with a capacity of over 33,000. The pitch measures 100 metres by 68 metres. The Leckwith development includes retail space, housing, and a hotel nearby. The stadium’s design allows for future expansion if needed. On matchdays, the widened Leckwith Road handles the extra traffic. The surrounding area offers views of the athletics stadium and retail park.
