Linz-Land District

Linz-Land is a district in Upper Austria, just south and west of the city of Linz. It stretches from the Danube valley into the foothills of the Alps. The countryside is a patchwork of rolling farmland, wooded hills and riverside meadows. Small towns and villages sit along the main roads and railway lines that link Linz to Salzburg and Vienna. The Traun and Krems rivers wind through the land, feeding meadows and fields. The district is known for its quiet charm and good transport links. Ansfelden, where the composer Anton Bruckner was born, is one of the larger towns. Enns, one of the oldest towns in Austria, lies on the Danube and has a long history as a trading post. Leonding and Traun are busy suburbs of Linz, while Wilhering is famous for its baroque monastery on the riverbank. Visitors find well-kept cycle paths along the rivers and quiet walking trails in the hills. The monastery at Wilhering has a grand library and painted halls open to the public. Local inns serve hearty Upper Austrian dishes, and village markets sell fresh produce in summer. The district’s small museums tell stories of local crafts, agriculture and the life of Anton Bruckner.
