Gernos Mountain Round Barrow Cemetery

A round barrow cemetery stands on Gernos Mountain in the parish of Troedyraur, Ceredigion. The largest mound measures 18.5 metres across and rises 0.7 metres above the moorland. Built by Neolithic or Bronze Age people, it served as a ceremonial site or burial place. Cadw has listed the barrow as SAM CD218 among nearly 400 similar mounds across Wales. More barrows survive here than any other kind of ancient monument. These earthen mounds first appeared around 3000 BC and the custom lasted until about 600 BC. Most were raised between 2400 and 1500 BC, when communities used them for communal rites and burials. The mountain’s exposed ridge offers wide views over rolling farmland and wooded valleys. Wind and rain have shaped the turf into gentle hollows and tussocks. A short path climbs from the lane to the ridge where the barrows sit. The turf-covered mounds blend into the heather and bracken, showing few signs of disturbance. Visitors can walk the ridge and see the largest barrow clearly marked on the ground. The silence and openness make it easy to imagine the ceremonies that once took place here.
