Heiligenstadt

Heiligenstadt lies on flat land beside the Danube canal in Vienna’s 19th district, Döbling. The area forms a narrow strip stretching northwest to Leopoldsberg, bordered by Nußdorf and Josefsdorf to the north, Grinzing to the west, and Unterdöbling and Oberdöbling to the south. Probusgasse once served as the main street of the old village and remains its central thoroughfare. The name Heiligenstadt, meaning ‘Holy City’, hints at an early religious site before Christian records began. Traces of Roman settlement have been found here, including parts of a tower from the limes frontier and a nearby cemetery. Heiligenstadt has shaped Vienna’s history through farming, wine, and industry. The Klosterneuburg Monastery owned vineyards here as early as 1250, and by the 14th century the settlement was one of the region’s wealthier communities. Wine cellars still line the hillside along Heiligenstädter Straße, reminders of centuries of viticulture. The area’s fortunes shifted after wars and sieges, including attacks by Matthias Corvinus in 1484 and Ottoman forces in 1529. In 1683, during the second siege of Vienna, many residents were killed, a memory preserved in the name Blutgasse. Today visitors walk quiet streets where Beethoven once stayed while composing during his summer months in 1802. The composer wrote the Heiligenstadt Testament here, grappling with deafness yet finding new creative purpose. Nearby, the Hohe Warte hosts Austria’s central meteorological office, founded in 1851. The Karl-Marx-Hof, built in the 1920s by Karl Ehn, stands as a landmark of social housing and political history. Along Heiligenstädter Straße, old factory buildings recall the area’s industrial past, while wine cellars and the Probusgasse keep the village’s heritage alive.
