House of the Heiligenstadt Testament

The house where Beethoven wrote his Heiligenstädter Testament stands in Heiligenstadt, a quiet part of Vienna’s 19th district. It sits at Probusgasse 6, a narrow lane lined with old walls and chestnut trees. The building is small and unassuming, a single-storey structure with a simple white façade. Heiligenstadt itself was once a village outside the city, reached by a country road that still winds through the area. Beethoven rented a room here during the summer of 1802 while seeking treatment at a nearby spa. The house is important because Beethoven wrote his famous letter here on 6 October 1802. In it he described his growing deafness, his loneliness and thoughts of suicide, yet he never sent the letter. The document was only found after his death in 1827. The city bought the house in 1967 and turned it into a small memorial. In 2017 the space was enlarged to become a museum covering 265 square metres, run by the Wien Museum. Inside, visitors see rooms arranged as they might have been in Beethoven’s time. A display case holds a replica of the letter he wrote, while panels explain his stay and the treatments he received. Outside, the garden is quiet, with benches under old trees. The street outside is narrow and cobbled, lined with houses from the same period. A few steps away, the path leads to the spa where Beethoven took the waters, adding to the sense of stepping back into his world.
