Shepherd's Bush tube station

Shepherd’s Bush station stands in the heart of Shepherd’s Bush Green, a busy roundabout in west London’s Hammersmith and Fulham borough. It is served by the Central line, with Holland Park to the east and White City to the west. A second station, Shepherd’s Bush Market, lies half a kilometre away on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines. The present Central line building opened in 2008 after eight months of closure while the original terracotta ticket hall was replaced. The station’s history goes back to 1900, when it became the western end of the Central London Railway. Harry Bell Measures designed the first ticket hall, and nearby power plant and depot were linked by a single-track tunnel. In the 1930s the platforms were lengthened to hold eight-car trains, and original lift shafts survive behind locked doors. Since 2022 the London Transport Museum has run tours that let visitors walk the disused corridors and see the early-1900s brickwork. Beside the station stands the Westfield Shopping Centre, built during a 2005–2008 redevelopment that also added a bus interchange and the new Overground stop. The rebuilt ticket hall and escalators were controversial, and the station remains without lifts because of high diversion costs for buried utilities. Local buses fan out across west London, and the green itself is a central meeting place for the neighbourhood.
