Westfield London

Westfield London stands on a former exhibition site in White City, West London. The brownfield land once hosted the 1908 Franco-British Exhibition, and its white-painted halls gave the area its name. The shopping centre occupies a large rectangle bounded by major roads: the West Cross Route, the Westway and Wood Lane. It opened in 2008 after five years of construction employing 8,000 workers. The original roof was designed by German engineers and the structure was built by Westfield’s own construction arm. During building, up to 3,000 local people received pre-employment training to fill centre jobs. The centre grew from 1.6 million to 2.6 million square feet after a 2018 expansion. It became the largest covered shopping development in the UK and Europe. Four anchor stores—John Lewis, Marks & Spencer, Next and Primark—draw steady crowds alongside 320 other shops. The expansion added a high-end retail area called The Village and a food court named Eat Gallery. Entertainment includes a seventeen-screen Vue cinema opened in 2010 and London’s first hi-tech indoor mini-golf centre, Puttshack, which opened in 2018. Visitors find wide walkways lined with shops and cafés, with The Village offering luxury brands. The Eat Gallery provides seating for hundreds of diners. KidZania once entertained families but closed in 2024 to make way for a new immersive experience in 2026. Two London Underground stations sit at the western and southern edges, linking the centre to the wider city.
