Portsmouth Garrison church

Domus Dei stands in Old Portsmouth, a quiet corner of the city near the historic dockyard. Built in the early 13th century as a hospice for travellers and the poor, it was later used as an armoury and then as the home of the military governor. The building has served many purposes over the centuries, from a royal wedding venue in 1662 to a place where foreign leaders met after the defeat of Napoleon. Its walls have witnessed both peaceful ceremonies and violent acts, including the murder of Bishop Adam Moleyns in 1450. The church was restored several times, most notably after bomb damage in the Second World War. The church is worth visiting for its long and varied history. It was founded by Peter des Roches, Bishop of Winchester, and William of Wrotham around 1212. The murder of Bishop Moleyns led to the town being placed under interdict for over fifty years. The building survived royal weddings, military meetings, and centuries of neglect before being restored in the 19th century. Its East window remains traditional, while other windows tell the story of the British Army’s ties to Portsmouth. The chancel survived the bombing, though the nave still bears the scars of war. Visitors find a mix of old and new inside the church. The chancel is intact, with its original structure still standing. The aisles were re-roofed in the 1990s, but the central nave remains open to the sky. The stained glass windows, added after the war, show scenes from military history and local life. Memorials line the walls, remembering those connected to the church over the centuries. The building’s rough, weathered appearance tells its story without needing grand descriptions. It is a place where history is still visible in every stone.
