Portsmouth Harbour railway station

Portsmouth Harbour railway station stands in the heart of the harbour, between the Gunwharf Quays shopping centre and the Historic Dockyard. Built over water on wooden piles later replaced by iron supports, it is an unusual main-line terminus. The station links Portsmouth to London Waterloo and other destinations, with ferry services to Gosport and the Isle of Wight. It opened in 1876 as the end of Frederick Banister’s Portsmouth Waterside Extension. Rebuilt in 1937 and again after wartime bombing, it has survived major changes. A short branch once connected the station to the dockyard but was closed after bomb damage in 1941. The station is managed by South Western Railway and has four platforms in use. Platform 2 was taken out of service in the early 1990s after repairs to the pier. The ticket office sits in the booking hall near the ferry terminal and is open every day until 19:00. There are customer help points and 38 bicycle spaces, but no car park. The station handles trains to London Waterloo, Southampton, Brighton and Cardiff, with services from Southern and Great Western Railway. Visitors find a busy transport hub with trains, buses and ferries all close together. The ferry to Ryde on the Isle of Wight departs from the same area, and through tickets cover the crossing. Local trains run to Southampton and beyond, while long-distance services reach Bristol and Cardiff. The station’s location makes it easy to reach the shops at Gunwharf Quays and the Historic Dockyard. Plans for improvements include a direct walkway into the shopping complex.
