Michelberg

The Michelberg rises near Haselbach in Lower Austria’s Korneuburg district, forming the highest point of the Rohrwald ridge. Its 409-metre summit offers wide views across the Tullnerfeld plain, the Weinviertel and the Danube valley as far as Vienna. A large stone bears a panoramic disc to help visitors orient themselves. Below the top stands a small chapel and a guesthouse where walkers can stop for refreshments. The grassy slopes are bordered by vineyards and fields, while scattered copses clothe the higher ground. The hill has long served as a lookout and cult site. Roman emperors built watchpoints along the Danube frontier, and the Michelberg’s isolated height made it an ideal station for warning beacons. Emperor Ferdinand I later included it in a chain of chalk-fire posts to signal approaching enemies. Medieval pilgrims came to the Michaelskirche, a 9th-century church that became a popular shrine until the 18th century. After its demolition, the community built a new chapel in 1867. Today the summit still holds the 1867 chapel and the foundations of the wartime Funkleit-Versuchsanlage Wotan. Visitors can see remains of the soldier barracks and garage on the southern slope. Excavations have uncovered a church and more than 150 early graves, evidence of the site’s long religious use. The old Michaelibründl spring once supplied water to the hilltop buildings and nearby brickworks. Flurnames recall other vanished springs, while stone quarries of the late 19th and early 20th centuries left deep cuts in the hillside.
