Glentauchers distillery

Glentauchers is a whisky distillery in Speyside, set in the village of Mulben near Keith in Moray. The distillery stands beside the hamlet of Tauchers, where a railway once served the area. Its buildings were designed by John Alcock and overseen by Charles Doig & Son when it opened in 1897. James Buchanan & Co. joined the founders a year later, and in 1925 the company became part of The Distillers Company. The site has three wash stills and three spirit stills, giving it an annual capacity of 4.5 million litres of pure alcohol. The distillery has a quiet reputation because most of its whisky goes into blends rather than single malts. It closed in 1985 under United Distillers and was later sold to Allied Distillers in 1989. The first official single malt appeared in 2000 as a 15-year-old bottling. Before that, Gordon & MacPhail released a semi-official version in the 1990s. These rare bottlings make the distillery a point of interest for malt whisky collectors. Visitors find a working distillery with traditional stills and the remains of Tauchers Platform railway station nearby. The surrounding Moray countryside provides a peaceful setting for a tour. The hamlet of Tauchers still shows signs of its past railway link, adding a touch of industrial history to the scene.
