Auchroisk distillery

Auchroisk distillery stands beside the Mulben Burn in Speyside, Moray. It was built in 1972 on the site of Dorie’s Well, whose water matched that used at Glen Spey. The new distillery was designed to supply malt whisky for the J&B blend. Production began in 1974 and the first single malt came off the stills four years later. The spirit was later marketed under the name The Singleton before reverting to Auchroisk. The water from Dorie’s Well proved identical to Glen Spey’s, allowing a seamless start. Auchroisk’s malt joined the J&B vatting hub, marrying with Highland whiskies before shipping. In 1986 the single malt was rebranded as The Singleton to ease pronunciation abroad. The name changed back to Auchroisk in 2001 when the Flora & Fauna 10-year-old appeared. A further rebrand in 2008 produced The Singleton of Auchroisk. Visitors walk past the red stream of the Mulben Burn to reach the distillery. Inside, stills produce spirit for both blends and single malt. The site’s Gaelic name means ‘shallow ford across the red stream’, recalling its setting. Warehouses hold casks waiting for marriage and maturation. The air carries the scent of malt and oak. Views stretch across rolling Speyside fields.
