Palais Klein

The Palais Klein stands in Vienna’s first district, the Innere Stadt, on Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platz. Built in 1867 by architect Carl Tietz for the Klein industrial family, the building originally had three wings. The rear wing was destroyed in 1945 and later removed. Its Neorenaissance style features a striking pink upper section above a rusticated ground floor. The central balcony on the piano nobile is supported by four Tuscan pilasters, while the windows above are framed by Ionic half-columns and balustrades. The interior of the Beletage remains remarkably intact. A three-aisled hall with a ceiling painting titled ‘Founding of the Hearth’ leads into an enfilade of a grand hall and two salons. Beyond these lies the ballroom, adorned with pale blue wall panels and a circular ceiling fresco depicting the seasons. Ornate cornices, grotesque corbels, and lion-headed modillions enrich the façade’s crowning elements. A modern attic storey was added behind the original roofline. Visitors find a carefully preserved example of 19th-century Viennese palace architecture. The exterior’s pink plaster contrasts with the stone base and sculpted details. Inside, the sequence of rooms follows classical ceremonial layouts, with rich plasterwork and painted ceilings. The ballroom’s cool hues and seasonal allegory create a calm yet grand atmosphere. The building’s layered history—from its industrial patrons to post-war changes—is visible in every detail.
