Lueger-Denkmal

The Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Denkmal stands in the heart of Vienna, on the Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platz near the Ringstrasse. It was designed by sculptor Josef Müllner and completed in 1926 after years of planning and debate. The monument honours Karl Lueger, a controversial mayor remembered for his antisemitic views and political influence. The statue is notable for its scale and detail. It rises on three circular steps over ten metres wide, topped by an octagonal pedestal with four bronze reliefs. These scenes depict Lueger’s social reforms, including gasworks, healthcare and urban green spaces. The bronze figure of Lueger himself stands more than four and a half metres tall, posed as if addressing a crowd. Visitors see a striking marble and bronze composition set against the city’s grand architecture. Four allegorical figures surround the pedestal, each representing Lueger’s welfare projects. The monument’s pink Untersberger marble catches the light, while the reliefs and inscriptions tell the story of his controversial legacy. The surrounding square remains a place of public gathering and ongoing debate.
