Battle of Britain Bunker

The Battle of Britain Bunker lies beneath RAF Uxbridge in the London Borough of Hillingdon. Built in 1939, it served as the nerve centre for No. 11 Group Fighter Command during the Second World War. The bunker’s 60-foot-deep concrete chambers housed the Operations Room where controllers coordinated fighter squadrons across seven sector stations. A ventilation system still supplies filtered air to the rooms, and a staircase of 76 steps leads down from ground level. The thick concrete walls and earth above made it bomb-proof, protecting vital communications throughout the war. The bunker played a decisive role in key moments of the conflict. Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding’s integrated air defence system linked radar, anti-aircraft units and the Observer Corps for the first time. Winston Churchill visited on 16 August 1940 and later praised the Few in his famous speech. On 15 September 1940 the King and Queen toured the site as every squadron in No. 11 Group fought in the skies above London. The Operations Room’s map tables, tote boards and coloured discs tracked enemy raids and squadron readiness in real time. Today the restored bunker forms part of a heritage attraction run by Hillingdon Council. Visitors walk down the same staircase used by wartime controllers and enter the dimly lit Operations Room. Original plotting tables, slat-boards and magnetic markers remain in place beside wartime photographs and exhibits. The adjacent museum occupies six rooms filled with artefacts and displays about the Dowding system and the Battle of Britain. Above ground, a modern visitor centre opened in 2018, completing the site’s transformation from secret wartime hub to public memorial.
