Brunel University London

Brunel University London stands on a 1960s campus in the London Borough of Hillingdon. The university took its name from Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the Victorian engineer. Its main buildings were designed in the brutalist style by Richard Sheppard, Robson & Partners. The lecture centre and other early structures remain in use today. Parts of the campus appeared in films such as Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. The university became independent in 1966 after receiving a royal charter. It now organises teaching across three colleges: Business, Arts and Social Sciences; Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences; and Health, Medicine and Life Sciences. Research is grouped into five institutes covering energy, health and digital futures. The university has more than 16,000 students and 2,200 staff. Visitors find a compact campus with landscaped walkways and modern facilities. The library has been extended and a new sports complex opened. The Students’ Union building was renovated and a Health Sciences centre built. The brutalist lecture centre is a Grade II listed landmark. The campus is set among green spaces and linked by paths to nearby Uxbridge.
