Tower Gateway

Tower Gateway is a Docklands Light Railway station in the City of London, standing near the Tower of London and Tower Bridge. It occupies the site of a former station called Minories and lies within London fare zone 1. The station adjoins the tracks to Fenchurch Street and connects to Tower Hill Underground station by a pedestrian crossing. A lift, escalator and stairs provide street-level access from Minories at the western end. A secondary staircase at the eastern end leads down to Mansell Street, serving the eastern edge of the City’s central business district. The station opened in 1987 as the western terminus of the initial DLR system. In 1991 an underground extension to Bank diverged from the original route between Tower Gateway and Shadwell, visible as a steep ramp near the platform ends. Tower Gateway now serves as the terminus for the less frequent Beckton branch, while most journeys require a change at another station. Originally built with two tracks and a cross-over, the station was rebuilt in 2008–2009 to operate as a single-track terminus with separate platforms for arrivals and departures. Visitors find a simple elevated structure with clear views of the DLR’s steep ramp to Bank. The rebuilt station has a platform on each side of the single track, allowing passengers to board and alight efficiently. It links the City’s financial heart with St Katharine Docks and nearby landmarks. London buses routes 42, 78, 100, 343 and the night route N551 serve the area. A short walk connects the station to Tower Hill Underground, making it a practical gateway for exploring the historic riverside.
