Tower Hill tube station

Tower Hill station stands in the East End of London, beside the old City wall. It serves the Circle and District lines and links to the Docklands Light Railway, mainline trains and river boats. The station replaced an earlier one called Tower of London in 1882, which closed after two years. Mark Lane station then took its place until the present building opened in 1967. In 2021 Transport for London added poppy roundels to mark Remembrance Day. Across the road in Trinity Square Gardens the Merchant Navy Memorial lists about 36,000 seafarers lost at sea. The entrance sits metres from a long stretch of the Roman London Wall. A short section of the wall can be seen above the westbound platform near the ceiling. The station’s platforms lie between Aldgate and Monument on the Circle line and between Aldgate East and Monument on the District line. London Buses and coaches stop outside, and the nearest stations are half a kilometre north and east. Off-peak trains run twelve times an hour eastbound and eighteen westbound. At peak times the service increases. Circle line trains run every ten minutes in both directions. The station handled over sixteen million entries and exits in 2025, making it one of the busiest in zone one. Plans propose closing the nearby Tower Gateway DLR branch and building new platforms at Tower Hill to improve links to Bank.
