Saint Michael's Church, Luxembourg

Saint Michael’s Church stands in the Fishmarket of Luxembourg City’s upper town. It is the oldest surviving place of worship in the city, first raised in 987 as the castle chapel for the Count of Luxembourg. Over the centuries the building was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, until the present structure took shape in 1688. Its design blends Romanesque and Baroque forms that pre-date the national Moselle Baroque style. Later restorations have kept the original appearance intact, with major work carried out in the 1960s, 1980s and again between 2003 and 2004. The church is tied to the city’s early history and to Roman Catholic tradition. As the castle chapel it served the counts who ruled the region, and it remains a focus for local religious life. The building’s long survival through wars and fires shows how central it has been to the community. Inside, visitors find a single nave under a barrel-vaulted ceiling. The plain white walls and simple furnishings emphasise the building’s historical layers. Outside, the Fishmarket square opens around the church, linking it to the surrounding streets and cafés. From the square the church tower rises above the rooftops, marking the spot where Luxembourg began.
