Oberneulander Mühle

The Oberneulander Mühle stands in the Bremen district of Oberneuland. It is a windmill built in 1848 after an earlier mill burned down in 1840. The new structure is a gallery-type Holländer mill with an eight-sided brick base and a timber-framed body clad in shingles. Its four jalousie sails turn automatically using a windrose to catch the wind. The mill is a protected monument and part of the Niedersächsische Mühlenstraße trail. Since 1972 it has housed an exhibition called ‘From Grain to Bread’ in its lower floors. Visitors can see the milling machinery still in working order and learn how flour was once produced. The site sits among open fields on the edge of the city. A paved path leads from the road to the mill’s base, where visitors can walk around the brick walls and look up at the turning sails. The surrounding area is quiet, with only the sound of wind in the sails breaking the stillness.
