Schloss Oberschüpf

Schloss Oberschüpf stands in the village of Oberschüpf near Boxberg in Baden-Württemberg. Built in 1587, it is a three-storey Renaissance building with a fine Renaissance doorway on its stair-tower. The name ‘New Schloss Oberschüpf’ was given to distinguish it from the nearby Burg Schüpf, known as the Old Schloss. A serious fire in July 2009 damaged the building, and restoration work began in 2010. The restoration cost about one million euros and returned the castle to its former appearance. The castle once served as a school and later as the town hall for the independent municipality of Oberschüpf. Today parts of the building house a flat for rent and a citizens’ hall for local events. The cellar has been converted into a venue for gatherings and celebrations. Other rooms are used as a village community centre and by the local table-tennis club. Visitors find a well-preserved Renaissance façade with its ornate portal and stair-tower. Inside, the restored rooms show the castle’s original layout and decoration. The cellar vaults offer a cool space for small concerts or private parties. Outside, the castle sits at the edge of the village, surrounded by quiet streets and nearby fields.
