U-1109

U-1109 is a German Type VIIC/41 submarine from the Second World War. Built at Nordseewerke in Emden, she was launched in June 1944 and commissioned in August under Oberleutnant Hans Julius Hoß. The boat displaced 769 tonnes on the surface and 871 tonnes when submerged, with a length of 67.10 metres. Her two diesel engines gave a top speed of 17.7 knots on the surface and 7.6 knots when dived. Armament included five torpedo tubes, an 8.8 cm deck gun and anti-aircraft weapons, with a crew of up to fifty-two. She completed two short patrols in early 1945, both without success, and ended the war at Loch Eriboll in Scotland. After surrender she was moved to Lisahally and chosen for Operation Deadlight. On 6 January 1946 she was sunk by torpedoes from the British submarine HMS Templar. The wreck now lies on the seabed at 55°49′N 08°31′W. Visitors can view the submarine’s remains through local diving charters operating from the north-west Highlands. The site lies in deep water off the coast, with the wreck largely intact on a gently sloping seabed. Marine growth covers the hull, and fish gather around the open hatches and gun mount. Charts mark the position clearly, and divers report good visibility when conditions allow. The wreck is a war grave and should be treated with respect.
