Loch Hope

Loch Hope is a long, narrow fresh-water loch in the far north of Scotland, running north to south through Sutherland. The A838 road passes its northern end at the small settlement of Hope, where the River Hope begins. The loch’s inflow comes from the Strathmore river, which drains a wide, mountainous catchment of streams and tributaries. Ben Hope, the most northerly Munro at 928 metres, rises near the southern shore. The loch is a quiet spot, often overlooked by drivers on the busy North Coast 500 route. The area holds scattered archaeological remains, with seven sites in Hope itself and others at Braesgill, Merkan and Alltnacaillich. Hope Lodge, built in 1878 for the Duke of Sutherland, stands as a reminder of the region’s sporting past. Nearby Moine House once sheltered travellers on the early A838 and now serves as a waypoint for walkers. The Strathmore river and its tributaries provide paths to prehistoric sites and a nature reserve. Visitors find a handful of tiny settlements along the lochside, each with a few cottages and short trails. Hope has a ferryman’s house and riverside weirs, while Muiseal offers parking for routes up Ben Hope. Alltnacaillich has a bridge over the Strathmore and links to a graveyard and a burnt mound. The landscape is open and windswept, with the loch reflecting the surrounding hills and the distant peaks of the Sutherland coast.
