Wilderness Island

Wilderness Island lies in Carshalton where the River Wandle and the Wrythe split around a small 2.7-hectare patch of land. The council owns the island and the London Wildlife Trust keeps it as a nature reserve of metropolitan importance. Former public gardens left a fish pond that still holds water today. Woodland, meadows and riverbank habitats meet on the island, each supporting different kinds of wildlife. A rare black poplar grows among the trees, while woodpeckers, kingfishers and grebes visit the ponds and riverside. The island’s past includes seventeenth-century copper mills that once stood on the site. Later it became a pleasure garden where people came to stroll and enjoy the outdoors. Traces of these uses remain in the shape of the pond and the layout of paths. The site’s varied history is matched by its present ecological richness. Wetland plants line the pond edges, and butterflies such as the speckled wood and holly blue flutter over the meadows. Visitors find a quiet green space reached by a footbridge across the Wandle. A loop path circles the island, passing the fish pond where grebes dive and kingfishers flash past. Woodland glades shelter the rare hornet clearwing moth, while meadows hold wildflowers that attract insects all summer. The riverbank offers views upstream towards Carshalton’s old mills and downstream towards the wider parkland.
