The Spinney Local Nature Reserve

The Spinney is a small local nature reserve in Carshalton, part of the London Borough of Sutton. It covers 0.4 hectares and sits on land owned by Sutton Council. The reserve was once managed by the London Wildlife Trust but is now looked after by the council and local volunteers. It takes the shape of an L and contains a mix of woodland and scrub. Plane and elm are the main tree species growing there. The site supports a variety of wildlife. Breeding birds include dunnocks, wrens and blackbirds. Wood boring beetles and foxes also live in the reserve. One unusual plant found here is butcher’s broom. The entrance on Nightingale Road remains locked and is not open to the public.
