Synagoge Neudeggergasse

The Neudeggergasse Synagogue stood in Josefstadt, the eighth district of Vienna, serving the Jewish communities of Neubau and Josefstadt. Built in 1903, it was commissioned by Baron Moritz Freiherr von Königswarter and designed by Max Fleischer in the North-German Gothic Revival style. Constructed mainly of brick, the building featured two towers and a main hall divided into three naves by pillars. More than 300 worshippers could be seated on the ground floor, while women observed from a balcony on the second floor. The synagogue was noted for its excellent acoustics. The synagogue was destroyed during the Kristallnacht pogroms in 1938, following Austria’s annexation by Nazi Germany. In 1998, parts of the original façade were rebuilt in vinyl during the construction of new housing. The owner of the property at Neudeggergasse 10 declined a full reconstruction. A memorial plaque was placed on the site in 2019 to mark its history. Today, visitors to Neudeggergasse 10–12 find a modern residential building with a reconstructed section of the former synagogue’s façade. The memorial plaque on the wall serves as a reminder of the building’s past. The site lies within a quiet residential area of Josefstadt, close to other historic buildings. The contrast between the new housing and the preserved fragments of the synagogue reflects the layers of Vienna’s history.
