Volkenroda Abbey

Volkenroda Abbey stands in the rolling countryside of Thuringia, near the village of Körner. Founded in 1131 by monks from Altenkamp, it became a key Cistercian centre. The abbey’s daughter houses spread across Germany, including Waldsassen and Loccum. Destruction during the Peasants’ War in 1525 was followed by rapid rebuilding, but dissolution came in 1540. After centuries as farm buildings and a village church, the site fell into disrepair by the 20th century. The abbey’s revival began in 1993 when a local group formed to restore it. In 1994 the Brotherhood of Jesus moved in, establishing a new monastic community. The site gained recognition in 1996 as a protected cultural heritage place of European importance. A youth education centre now occupies the monastery buildings, linking past and present. Visitors find a quiet, reflective place where medieval walls meet modern purpose. The former abbey church serves as a venue for concerts and events. The surrounding grounds include gardens and walking paths through the peaceful countryside. The restored cloister and refectory offer glimpses of monastic life. The village itself, once marked for resettlement, now thrives alongside the abbey’s renewed presence.
