Sender Keula

The Sender Keula stands in open farmland north-east of the village of Keula in the Kyffhäuserkreis of central Thüringen. It is a transmission site run by Deutsche Telekom AG for FM radio programmes. A tall steel mast carries the antennas high above the flat fields. The site began broadcasting in October 1974 with a mobile 5 kW medium-wave transmitter on 557 kHz. After the Wende the old mast was dismantled and in 1993 a new 180-metre stayed mast was built in its place. The mast still carries FM radio today. Visitors see a single 180-metre steel lattice mast held by four sets of guy wires anchored in concrete bases. The surrounding fields stretch away to the horizon, giving a clear view of the slender structure against the sky.
