Rötelstein
The Rötelstein is a steep-sided, cone-shaped mountain rising 2,247 metres above sea level in the Dachstein range. It stands on the edge of Filzmoos, a village in the Pongau district of Salzburg. The peak commands wide views across the Enns valley, the Lower Tauern chain and the entire Dachstein massif. A small summit cross and a visitors’ book are fixed to the top of the rock cone. Walkers choose the Rötelstein for its clear panoramas and manageable routes. The eastern route follows the Sulzenhals ridge up from the valley floor. The western approach climbs from Ahorneggalm, a high alpine pasture reached by a rough track. Both paths are marked and take between four and six hours, depending on fitness. At the top the air is cool and the outlook endless. On clear days the eye travels from the Enns valley in the north to the peaks of the Niedere Tauern in the south. The steep rock walls drop away on every side, making the summit feel like an island in the sky.
