Brandywell Stadium

The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium stands on Lone Moor Road in Derry, a municipal football ground in the Brandywell district south-west of the Bogside. It shares the road with Celtic Park, home of the Derry GAA, and lies within walking distance of the city centre. The ground has been home to Derry City FC since 1929, though its football history goes back to the late 19th century. Other clubs also use the stadium, including Sion Swifts Ladies and Foyle Belles FC. In 2018 the ground was renamed after Ryan McBride, a former Derry City captain. The stadium has hosted notable matches, such as Derry City’s 1–0 UEFA Cup win over IFK Göteborg in 2006. It also staged the 2006 FAI League Cup final, which Derry City won on penalties. The pitch measures 111 yards by 72 yards and can hold 8,200 spectators on domestic match days. Between 1971 and 1985 the ground hosted only greyhound meetings and junior football because of the Troubles. Derry City left the Irish League in 1972 and returned in 1985 after joining the League of Ireland. Visitors find a curved cantilever stand, a small Glentoran Stand, and terraced sections including the former ‘Jungle’ area. The ‘New Stand’ has quiet blocks nicknamed the ‘Library’ and louder areas around Block J. A club shop, ticket office, and parking are on site. Plans exist to build an 8,000-seat stadium, new pitches, and a medical centre. The ground also hosts the Foyle Cup finals and has no permanent police presence during matches.
