Bazargebäude

The Bazargebäude stands in Salzburg’s old town on the right bank of the Salzach. Completed in 1882, it was designed by Valentin and Jakob Ceconi as a two-storey structure with a mansard roof and neobaroque detailing. The building rises eight metres and features balustrades along its roofline. Once filled with small shops, it gave the place its name. Between 1904 and 1906 the owners A. Baldi and Josef Musch commissioned Ceconi to add another mansard storey and reshape the roof. Karl Pirich, working for the same firm, likely drew the plans that created the building’s distinctive skyline of domes, lanterns and ornamental details. Today the ground floor holds Café Bazar and the upper levels house Bankhaus Spängler, Austria’s oldest bank. The café still occupies the original shop-lined spaces, while the bank’s offices sit in the later mansard storey. The building’s transformation reflects the city’s shift from small-scale retail to grand corporate presence.
