All Saints Church, Icklingham

All Saints’ Church stands on the highest point in Icklingham, a Suffolk village beside the A1101 road between Mildenhall and Bury St Edmunds. The building occupies the site of an ancient trackway called Icknield Way, near an important junction of that old route. It is a redundant Anglican church, no longer used for regular worship, and is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The church is built of flint rubble with freestone dressings and has a thatched roof. A Roman Christian graveyard once existed nearby, and a lead font found there is now in the British Museum. The church’s architecture reflects many centuries of change. Parts of the nave date from the 11th or 12th century, while most of the structure was rebuilt in the 14th century. A south porch was added in the 15th century, and the southwest tower rises in three stages with buttresses and bell openings. Inside, the south arcade has four bays on octagonal piers, and the chancel contains 14th-century mosaic tiles with line-impressed patterns. The limestone font, carved pulpit, and some stained glass also survive from earlier periods. Visitors find a quiet, uncluttered interior with a partly preserved rood screen and stairs to the former rood loft. The walls carry carved cornices and trefoil-headed piscinas, while the pews are decorated with poppyheads. Three bells hang in the tower, two cast between 1424 and 1513 and the third in 1608. The church’s exterior shows Norman fabric in the north nave wall and a five-light east window in the south aisle, its niches still bearing traces of colour. The thatched roof and flint walls give the building a simple, enduring presence.
