A11 road

The A11 is a major trunk road running from London to Norwich. In Cambridgeshire it begins at the M11’s Junction 9A, close to the Essex border. For most of its length it follows the line of an old Roman road. Near Newmarket it overlaps with the A14 on the bypass. The road then continues northeast through Thetford Forest. The A11 was once notorious for congestion through towns such as Newmarket, Thetford and Attleborough. Since the 1970s successive bypasses have been built to keep traffic moving. The final stretch to Norwich was upgraded to dual carriageway in December 2014. This cut peak journey times by up to twenty-five minutes. The Elveden War Memorial stands beside the road in Thetford Forest. A cycleway runs alongside the A11 between London and Bow. It uses one-way tracks on both sides of the road, marked with blue paint and cycle symbols. Beyond Thetford the Wymondham to Sprowston Pedalway follows the A11 into Norwich. The route leaves the carriageway at Eaton and rejoins at the city’s northern edge.
