University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham stands on two main sites within the city. University Park occupies 320 acres of landscaped parkland south-west of the centre, built around a lake and public gardens. The Jubilee Campus, one mile away, occupies the former Raleigh bicycle factory. A third campus, Sutton Bonington, lies five miles south-west and houses the School of Biosciences. The university’s reputation rests on its research and teaching. Three Nobel Prizes and a Fields Medal have been awarded to its staff and graduates. It belongs to the Russell Group of research-intensive universities and the Universitas 21 network. More than 46,000 students study across the UK, China and Malaysia. The first college opened in 1881 with four professors; today it has five faculties and a medical school founded in 1970. University Park’s Trent Building, opened by King George V in 1928, overlooks the lake and gardens. The Physics department still displays the blackboard used by Albert Einstein during a lecture in the 1930s. The Jubilee Campus, opened in 1999, features modern architecture and hosts the School of Computer Science. The original college building on Shakespeare Street, now part of Nottingham Trent University, was designed in the neo-gothic style.
