Cornerstone Church

Cornerstone Church stands in Nottingham, an independent evangelical church with about 750 people worshipping each Sunday. It began in 1825 as an overflow from Stoney Street Baptist Church in the city centre. After meeting for many years in Hyson Green and then Raleigh Street, the congregation moved in 2012 to a new building on Castle Boulevard in Lenton. The £3.5 million structure was paid for by the church’s own members. Its location near the University of Nottingham’s campuses makes it a natural choice for students. The church runs two main Sunday services at 9:15 am and 11:15 am, each attended by around 750 people, many of them families. Children and young people have their own programmes during these services. An evening service at 7:00 pm focuses on adults, with no separate children’s activities. All services use contemporary styles while keeping strong expository preaching and gospel teaching at their heart. A weekly prayer meeting begins at 6:30 pm, just before the evening service. Cornerstone has a large team to run its many ministries, including outreach to international and UK students, children’s and youth work, English language classes, and hosting Christian conferences. It supports members involved in world mission and is affiliated with groups such as the Evangelical Alliance. The Lead Minister is John Russell, who took over from Peter Lewis after his retirement in 2012. Peter Lewis had led the church since September 1969.
