Ludwigsdenkmal

The Ludwigsdenkmal stands in Worms on the Rhine in Rheinland-Pfalz. It is a monument to Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse and the Rhine, built in 1895 on the former Paradeplatz, now called Ludwigsplatz. The city council led the initiative and local people funded the work, following a design by city architect Karl Hofmann. The sculpture was created by Johannes Hirt. The monument honours the grand duke’s military leadership, especially during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. The grand duke had commanded Hessian troops at battles such as Gravelotte and Metz. His ancestor had risen from landgrave to grand duke with Napoleon’s help, yet the Hessian rulers later relied on Prussia for protection. In 1866, his predecessor even fled across the Rhine to Worms when Prussian forces advanced. The unveiling in 1895 was attended by the grand duke’s son Ernst Ludwig and his sister Princess Viktoria. Today the monument occupies the western end of a paved square with a central basin and fountain. Two stone lions flank a set of steps leading up to the obelisk on its pedestal. Water spouts add movement to the scene. The area was once a park with a water feature, then a car park after the Second World War, before being restored to open space in the 1990s. The reconstructed layout keeps the original spirit while adapting to modern use.
