Luther monument Worms

The Luther Monument stands in Worms, a city in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany. It is a large bronze group of statues designed by Ernst Rietschel and unveiled in 1868. The monument centres on a statue of Martin Luther, surrounded by eleven others representing reformers, political figures, and towns. The arrangement forms a castle shape, inspired by Luther’s hymn ‘A Mighty Fortress Is Our God’. Copies of the central Luther statue exist in Europe and the United States, including Washington, D.C. The monument commemorates key events in Luther’s life, such as his posting of the Ninety-five Theses in 1517 and his defence at the Diet of Worms in 1521. Rietschel completed the main statue before his death in 1861, and his pupils finished the rest. Adolf von Donndorf contributed figures of Reuchlin and Frederick the Wise, while Johannes Schilling created a statue for Speyer. Gustav Adolph Kietz made statues of Jan Hus, Philipp Melanchthon, and others. Visitors find a stepped base with bronze figures on stone plinths, arranged like a castle. Luther is shown in a preacher’s robe, holding a Bible and resting his fist on it. Inscriptions include quotations, scenes from Luther’s life, and coats of arms of 27 Protestant towns. Bronze reliefs depict Electors of Saxony and other reformers. The monument’s design reflects Luther’s hymn, making it a powerful tribute to the reformer’s legacy.
