Isle of Purbeck

The Isle of Purbeck is a peninsula in Dorset, bounded by the English Channel to the south and east where steep cliffs drop to the sea. To the north lie the marshy lands of the River Frome and Poole Harbour, while its western edge is marked by barren heaths near Flower’s Barrow. The southernmost point is St Alban’s Head, also known as St Aldhelm’s Head. The landscape shifts from coastal cliffs to inland heaths and lowlands, creating varied scenery within a small area. The geology is complex, with Jurassic rocks, Cretaceous chalk and Eocene clays shaping the land. This diversity supports unusual landforms like Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. The Isle is worth visiting for its natural and historical richness. It holds Britain’s highest concentration of native and ancient wildflowers for its size, including nearly 50,000 Early Spider Orchids counted in 2009. The Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site runs along its southern edge, recognised for its unique geology. Quarrying once shaped the local economy, supplying stone for cathedrals and rebuilding London after the Great Fire. The area also has Roman sites such as a villa at Bucknowle Farm and a Norman chapel at St Aldhelm’s Head with possible earlier origins. Visitors find dramatic cliffs, sheltered coves and rolling heaths to explore. Wildflower meadows appear in season, from orchids at Dancing Ledge to heather on Hartland Moor. The remains of old quarries like Tilly Whim and cliff-edge workings at Winspit show the island’s industrial past. Corfe Castle overlooks the village, its stone walls standing where Saxon King Edward the Martyr was killed in 978. The Saxon earthworks of Wareham and medieval wall paintings in St Martin’s church add to the historical layers.
