St James's Church, Kingston (Isle of Purbeck)

St James’s Church stands on a limestone ridge in the Purbeck Hills, 135 metres above sea level, overlooking the village of Kingston on the Isle of Purbeck. The present building was designed by George Edmund Street and completed in 1879 after six years of work. It replaced an earlier chapel built in 1833 by the 1st Earl of Eldon and later became the parish church in 1922. The church’s exposed position has led to weathering, requiring repairs in the 1980s to preserve its structure. Its size and grandeur have earned it the nickname the ‘Cathedral of the Purbecks’. The exterior is built from local shell limestone, now tinged pink by algae. The church’s architecture blends 13th-century Gothic influences with Street’s own innovations. The central tower rises above the roof, its belfry lit by louvred lancets arranged in pairs and singles. The west front features a large rose window of 21 segments, while the nave aisles are lined with buttresses and pairs of lancets. Nikolaus Pevsner noted the north transept’s stair turret as a replica of Christchurch Priory’s. Inside, Purbeck marble shafts and Portland stone walls create a rich contrast, with oak fittings taken from the Eldon estate. The crossing holds a wrought-iron screen and Victorian choir stalls seating twenty choristers. Visitors enter through a narthex into a four-bay nave with a wagon roof and dog-tooth carvings on the arcades. The rose window in the west wall depicts biblical scenes, including Noah and his ark. The crossing and transepts are vaulted in stone, while the sanctuary is raised on crinoidal limestone steps. The altar stands on Carrara marble, and the floor is laid with Victorian tiles from Mintons. The organ, built in 1880, has ivory keys and a case of oak, its pipes made from spotted metal. The church remains a landmark in a quiet village, its craftsmanship and materials telling the story of its patrons and builders.
