Tarbat Ness Lighthouse

The Tarbat Ness Lighthouse stands at the north-west tip of the Tarbat Ness peninsula on Scotland’s east coast, near the fishing village of Portmahomack. Built in 1830 by Robert Stevenson, the tower rises 53 metres above the Moray Firth and contains 203 steps to the lantern. Two broad red bands encircle the white shaft, making it the third tallest lighthouse in Scotland. The site overlooks the North Sea and the entrance to the Cromarty Firth, where storms have driven many vessels ashore. Local stories claim the platform was once a Roman fort and later a gathering place for witches. The lighthouse was commissioned after a November 1826 storm in the Moray Firth sank sixteen ships and prompted urgent calls for coastal lights. James Smith of Inverness built the tower for £9,361 under Stevenson’s design for the Northern Lighthouse Board. The light first shone on 26 January 1830 and has since guided mariners through treacherous waters. Records show that even with the beacon, wrecks still occurred; one notable rescue by keeper William Davidson saved four of five crew from a Norwegian schooner. Earthquake tremors have occasionally shaken the lantern, rattling lamp glasses and shades. Visitors reach the lighthouse by a narrow road that ends at the base of the peninsula. The tower’s exterior shows its sturdy granite blocks and the distinctive red bands. Inside, the spiral stair winds upward past small landings lit by narrow windows. At the top, the lantern room offers sweeping views across the Tarbat Ness cliffs and along the coast to the Sutherland hills. The surrounding land is a haven for migratory birds, and the nearby fishing village of Portmahomack provides a glimpse of Highland coastal life. The site also holds traces of its Roman past, with foundations believed to belong to an ancient fort.
