Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt

The parish church in Schröcken stands in the Bregenz Forest valley, surrounded by a walled cemetery. It belongs to the Diocese of Feldkirch and is dedicated to the Feast of the Assumption. The present building replaced an earlier church after a fire in 1863, and the tower with its pointed spire was added in the late 18th century. The church is worth visiting for its well-preserved 19th-century furnishings and the work of local artists. The high altar, painted by Melchior Paul von Deschwanden, shows the Assumption of Mary framed by figures of Peter and Paul. The side altars, pulpit and font were made by Fidelius Rudhart, whose reliefs and statues appear throughout. Inside, the nave has a barrel vault with short lunettes and a broad cornice. Three round-arched windows light each side wall. A double gallery at the west end rests on curved columns. The stained glass, by the Schnitzler studio in Dornbirn, depicts the holy Agnes and Aloisius in the chancel.
