SS Great Britain

SS Great Britain stands in Bristol Harbour, a restored iron-hulled steamship built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Launched in 1843, she was the largest passenger ship in the world until 1853. The vessel combined an iron hull with screw propulsion for the first time in a large ocean-going ship. She crossed the Atlantic in 14 days in 1845, setting a new standard for speed and technology. After years of service, she carried emigrants to Australia before being retired to the Falkland Islands. In 1970, Sir Jack Hayward funded her return to Bristol, where she now sits in the same dry dock where she was built. The ship’s engineering breakthroughs made her one of the most advanced vessels of her time. Brunel’s team scrapped plans for a wooden hull after seeing John Laird’s iron ship Rainbow in Bristol. They adopted screw propulsion after tests with Francis Pettit Smith’s SS Archimedes proved its advantages. The four-bladed propeller improved stability, fuel efficiency and manoeuvrability. Scientific American initially doubted the design, but it soon became the future of steamship technology. Her construction took six years and cost far more than expected, nearly bankrupting the company. Visitors board the ship in Bristol Harbour to explore her four decks. The engine room still holds the original twin-cylinder engines with 220 cm cylinders. The passenger cabins, dining saloons and promenade decks have been carefully restored. The dry dock itself is part of the attraction, showing how the ship was built. Interactive displays explain her voyages and the people who sailed on her. The vessel is now a museum ship, listed as part of the National Historic Fleet.
