Ötscher - Dürrenstein

Ötscher-Dürrenstein is a large protected area in Lower Austria covering over forty-two thousand hectares of land. It lies where the northern Alps meet the foothills, with steep limestone walls rising above deep forests and flower-rich meadows. The heart of the site sits at the coordinates of the Ötscher massif, the highest point in the region. The area was declared a European site in 1998 to safeguard six plant species and twenty-two animal species. By 2010 it had gained stricter protection as a special conservation area. Experts recognise thirty-six natural habitats here, from alpine grasslands to calcareous fens and spruce forests. Among the protected residents are the brown bear, Eurasian lynx, and the lady’s-slipper orchid. Visitors walk through beech woods and along mountain streams where trout dart beneath the surface. Yellow-bellied toads call from small pools, and rare butterflies drift over limestone pavements. The cliffs shelter inaccessible caves, while lower slopes hold alluvial forests of alder and ash. The air carries the scent of pine resin and wild thyme, and the only sounds are wind in the treetops and the occasional call of a raven.
