Luther Church
The Lutherkirche stands on the Ringstraße in Wiesbaden, a white-plastered Jugendstil church built between 1908 and 1910 to designs by Friedrich Pützer. Its 50-metre tower rises above a 37-metre ridge supported by an early steel frame, while the mosaic tympanum above the main door carries lines from Martin Luther’s hymn. The church forms one ensemble with two parish houses on Mosbacher Straße and Sartoriusstraße, planned as a harmonious Gesamtkunstwerk of German Protestant culture. Inside, the oval space slopes gently toward the altar, with ribbed vaults carried on four columns and Jugendstil woodwork along walls and ceiling. Otto Linnemann of Frankfurt supplied all windows, paintwork and the bridal staircase in 1911, and many original drawings survive in the Linnemann archive. The building is notable for its three organs and fine acoustics, making it a regular concert venue. The first organ, built by Walcker in 1911 behind the altar, was restored in the 1980s with help from the German Republic and Hesse. A second, larger organ by Klais was installed in the gallery in 1979, and a small positive organ by Thomas Jann sits near the altar. The church supports three musical groups: the Bachchor Wiesbaden, a children’s and youth choir, and a brass choir. Good acoustics and versatile instruments attract events such as Rheingau Musik Festival concerts, including performances by the Thomanerchor under conductors Gotthold Schwarz and Andreas Reize. Visitors find a calm interior lit by Linnemann’s windows and framed by delicate wood panelling and painted ceilings. The altar, pulpit and main organ sit close together at the centre, with seating arranged around them as the Wiesbadener Programm intended. The restored Jugendstil decoration and the two historic organs offer a rare chance to hear period instruments in their original setting. Outside, the tower and expansive roof dominate the corner of Gutenbergplatz, while the linked parish houses complete the composition.
