Klabauter Theater

The Klabauter Theatre is a professional inclusive theatre in Hamburg-Mitte. It stands near the Berliner Tor and the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in the Borgfelde district. The Rauhe Haus foundation runs the theatre, which seats about eighty people. It is one of Hamburg’s few off-stage venues and receives city funding as a private theatre. Founded in 1998, it is among Germany’s oldest and best-known professional inclusive theatres. The stage brings together full-time actors and guest performers from the free scene. Agnes Wessalowski is among its best-known actresses. The theatre stages classic and modern plays as well as its own works. Laura Wendling and Roland Wendling lead the artistic and theatre-pedagogical sides. Regular in-house productions are joined by tours and festival appearances. The building was once a community hall in a former church centre. Astrid Eggers led the early project that grew into today’s theatre. In 2018 the theatre moved into its own hall under the Rauhe Haus foundation. The Deutsche Bühne named it the best free-scene theatre in 2018, and it also won the Körber Studio Junge Regie audience prize that year.
